Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has questioned the future and ownership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following a rally addressed by EALA MP Winnie Odinga on Sunday at Kamukunji Grounds in Kibra, Nairobi.

The rally, which drew a large crowd, came amid ongoing debates within the party after the death of its longtime leader, Raila Odinga.

In a candid social media post, Salasya said his earlier opposition to ODM joining a broad-based government had been vindicated by what he described as growing mistrust among party leaders.

He argued that negotiations within ODM have become strained, with different factions pursuing competing interests rather than a shared vision.

The legislator recalled an incident at Nyayo Stadium, where he claimed he was assaulted during party events, using the experience to underline his long-standing frustrations with ODM’s internal politics.

According to Salasya, the party is now so divided that “everyone is claiming their share,” making unity increasingly difficult to achieve.

He likened the current situation in ODM to the collapse of the former FORD party, warning that history could be repeating itself.

Salasya suggested that a possible split within ODM might ultimately serve the public interest by preventing the emergence of a de facto one-party system and allowing independent leaders to emerge without fear of party pressure.

Salasya also advised Winnie Odinga to work closely with Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna.

He described Sifuna as a key figure in the party’s administration, citing his role as the official signatory to ODM’s finances registered with the Registrar of Political Parties.

The remarks add to a growing public debate about ODM’s leadership, cohesion, and political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

While Winnie Odinga does not hold a formal leadership position in the party, her rally has intensified scrutiny over who wields real influence within ODM and how the party will navigate its post-Raila era.
