Senior Counsel Nelson Havi has sharply criticised Lamu County Woman Representative Monicah Muthoni Marubu following an incident at a funeral in Murang’a County where her political chants provoked outrage among mourners.

Havi, who was present at the burial, recounted on social media that Marubu began chanting “Two Term” in reference to President William Ruto’s re-election bid during an otherwise calm and solemn event.

He described her actions as a serious lapse in judgment that quickly turned the gathering chaotic.

“I was present in Murang’a County when Lamu Woman Representative Muthoni Marubu, with profound lack of emotional intelligence, started chanting ‘Two Term’ in an otherwise calm funeral,” Havi said. “The crowd charged at her. The security intervened and took her away to a safe house.”

Eyewitness reports indicated that the chants sparked booing and heckling from mourners, forcing security officers to escort Marubu to safety.

The funeral, attended by a mix of political figures and local residents, became tense as the crowd reacted to what was perceived as an inappropriate politicisation of the event.

Havi strongly condemned Marubu’s conduct, arguing that funerals should remain spaces of mourning and unity, not platforms for political messaging.

“What she did was stupid,” he added, comments that have since generated debate on social media about the role of politicians in sensitive public gatherings.

The incident has drawn mixed reactions, with some defending Marubu and framing the crowd’s response as politically motivated, while others faulted her for failing to respect the occasion.

Marubu, elected as an independent in 2022 before aligning with the Kenya Kwanza coalition, has not released a detailed public response to Havi’s remarks.
