National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has been re-elected to the Standing Committee (Executive Committee) of the Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference (CSPOC), marking his second term and reinforcing Kenya’s role as Eastern Africa’s parliamentary representative.

The announcement followed the closing ceremony of the 28th CSPOC, held in New Delhi, India, which convened parliamentary leaders from across the Commonwealth to discuss governance, citizen engagement, and the integration of innovation and technology in legislative processes.

“The highly interactive sessions enabled Speakers to deliberate on strategies to enhance public understanding of Parliament and promote meaningful citizen participation beyond the act of voting,” Wetangula said.

He noted that discussions focused on how parliaments can adapt to a rapidly evolving global environment and leverage technological advancements to fulfill their mandates effectively.

The keynote address was delivered by Om Birla, Speaker of India’s Lok Sabha, who emphasized the importance of strong parliamentary practices in sustaining democratic governance.

Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, MP, Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, took over the CSPOC Chairmanship and will host the 29th CSPOC.

Wetangula’s re-election underscores Kenya’s growing influence in regional and international parliamentary affairs.

He expressed commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen-centered governance within the Commonwealth’s legislative networks.

The 28th CSPOC provided a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, equipping Speakers with strategies to strengthen parliamentary institutions and reinforce the role of Parliament in democratic governance across member states.
