Nandi Senator Kiprotich Cherargei has strongly criticised the Inspector General of Police, Bwana Kanja, over the handling of alleged police brutality in Nandi Hills, describing the National Police Service’s response as “insensitive, inhumane and casual.”
Speaking on Friday, Cherargei expressed outrage over the treatment of local youth by police officers at Nandi Hills Police Station, whose actions were captured on CCTV and circulated on social media.
He faulted the IG for not immediately interdicting and suspending the officers to allow for independent investigations into their conduct.
“The response by the Inspector General of Police to police brutality meted to my youth in Nandi Hills Town is unacceptable. By now, the rogue officers should have been interdicted to pave the way for an independent investigation into their misconduct,” Cherargei stated.
The Senator further alleged that the same officers were involved in previous criminal activities, including the 2025 Kimwani killings in Kimwani area, Nandi County, and are currently protecting land grabbers in the same constituency.
He accused the Inspector General of undermining the National Police Service’s integrity, saying, “Bwana IG Kanja, you are busy running down the National Police Service into a police force.”
Cherargei warned that in due course, the IG and the officers involved would be held accountable for their actions.
He emphasised the need for transparency, professionalism, and adherence to the law in policing, reiterating that the public expects swift disciplinary action against errant officers.
His remarks come after the National Police Service condemned the alleged misconduct, assuring the public of a thorough investigation.
The NPS urged anyone with information to report to the nearest station or use the toll-free lines, while reaffirming its commitment to serving Kenyans lawfully and professionally.
Cherargei’s criticism underscores growing public concern over police accountability and the demand for tangible action against officers implicated in abuse or criminal activities within Nandi County.
