Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has condemned the violent attack at Witima ACK Church in Othaya on Sunday, describing it as a dangerous escalation of political intimidation.

The incident reportedly saw tear gas deployed during a service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and several other leaders, leaving worshippers distressed.

Speaking on X, Kindiki emphasized that such actions violate Kenya’s democratic principles and the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of worship.

“Violence, whether organized by political opponents, by self for sympathy, or by whoever for whatever purpose, is a criminal act that undermines our democracy,” he said, calling for an impartial investigation into those responsible.

The Deputy President warned that attacks on religious spaces cannot replace legitimate political competition.

He urged that all perpetrators, planners, and enablers be prosecuted to set a precedent against political violence.

Kindiki also shifted focus to the future of Kenya’s politics, calling for a move away from ethnic-driven confrontations and disruptions.

“Let us compete on which team has better ideas, policies, and programmes to transform Kenya, industrialize it, create more jobs, and eradicate extreme poverty in the shortest possible time,” he said.

He argued that the Kenya of today and tomorrow must be anchored on innovation, debate, and development, rather than intimidation and brute force.

The Witima Church incident has reignited national discussions on political violence, with faith leaders and civil society groups demanding accountability and protection for worshippers.

Security agencies are now under pressure to ensure such attacks do not recur, with Kindiki’s comments highlighting the urgent need for a political culture rooted in ideas, dialogue, and lawful contestation rather than fear and aggression.
