Mombasa County has been ranked among Africa’s cleanest and most attractive cities in a new continental assessment by The Africa Report, drawing praise from Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and residents alike.
The recognition places the coastal city alongside leading African urban centres that have made notable progress in cleanliness, urban management and quality of life.
Reacting to the announcement on X, Governor Nassir described the ranking as a proud milestone for the county.
He said the recognition reflects sustained commitment by the county government and the cooperation of residents in improving the city’s environment.
According to the governor, the ranking affirms that consistent effort and shared responsibility can deliver visible transformation in urban centres.
The Africa Report assessment evaluates cities across the continent using indicators such as waste management systems, sanitation standards, urban organisation and overall attractiveness to residents, investors and tourists.
Kigali, Rwanda, retained its position at the top of the list, with other cities recognised for prioritising cleanliness and liveability.
Mombasa’s inclusion signals growing confidence in its environmental and urban reforms.
Governor Nassir noted that the county administration is not relenting on its efforts.
He said Mombasa is scaling up waste management initiatives as part of a broader goal to create a cleaner and healthier city.
The focus, he added, remains on ensuring every resident lives in a dignified environment supported by reliable public services.
