Six people were killed on the spot following a horrific road accident involving a bus and a matatu along Mombasa Road at Katumani, near Konza City, Machakos County.
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti confirmed the fatal crash in a statement issued on Friday, January 3, saying the accident occurred a day earlier on one of the busiest sections of the Nairobi–Mombasa highway.
The collision caused panic among motorists and residents, briefly disrupting traffic flow along the corridor.
According to the governor, emergency response teams from Muumandu and Kyumbi were swiftly dispatched to the scene after the accident was reported.
The teams carried out rescue and evacuation operations as police secured the area to prevent further incidents.
“Six passengers were confirmed dead at the scene,” Ndeti said, adding that the impact of the collision was severe.
The bodies of the deceased were later moved to mortuaries as families awaited official identification and further communication from authorities.
Seven other passengers sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where they are currently receiving specialised medical care.
Hospital sources indicated that some of the victims were admitted in critical condition and placed under close medical observation.
Governor Ndeti said rescue operations at the scene have since been concluded, with relevant authorities now focusing on traffic control and investigations to establish the cause of the accident.
Police officers remained at the scene for several hours to manage congestion and allow investigators to assess the wreckage.
While conveying her condolences to the families of the victims, the governor urged motorists to exercise extra caution on the roads, especially as schools reopen for the first term.
“With increased traffic expected as learners return to school, all road users must be vigilant and observe traffic rules to avoid such tragic incidents,” she said.
