A man identified as Khalid Warsame has sparked online discussion after revealing he is considering relocating from the United States to Kenya, citing the high cost of living in America compared to Nairobi.
In a post shared on X, Warsame said his family is seriously weighing the option of moving to the Kenyan capital, describing it as both affordable and practical for long-term living.
He noted that for about $2,000 (approximately Sh260,000) per month, his family of five could live comfortably in a high-end neighbourhood, own a car, and educate their children in private schools—an amount he said is less than what he currently pays in rent alone in the US.
“We have a decision to make. Relocating to Nairobi is so tempting,” Warsame wrote.
He added that living in Kenya would allow his family to enjoy a better quality of life, including eating out more frequently, taking several holidays each year, investing in property, and supporting extended family members.
Warsame also pointed out that they could travel to Istanbul for specialised healthcare while still saving money overall.
Breaking down the cost of the move, Warsame estimated that flying his family from Nashville to Nairobi would cost about $2,000.
Renting and furnishing an apartment would require around $8,000, while clothes and other shopping expenses would take an additional $1,000.
According to him, selling household items such as furniture and electronics in the US would significantly reduce relocation costs.
“The math definitely checks out. It’s a matter of execution,” he said.
Warsame revealed that the move would not be entirely new for his family. His older brother relocated to Nairobi four years ago, while his sister recently moved from London to the city.
He added that two other siblings are also considering making the same decision.
