Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has affirmed that the 5,500 interns under the Government’s Affordable Housing Programme are key beneficiaries of Kenya Kwanza’s youth employment and economic empowerment initiatives.
Speaking at State House, Nairobi, during the launch of the Affordable Housing Programme Internship, Kindiki highlighted that the programme forms part of a broader Government effort to create jobs and income opportunities for millions of young Kenyans across the country.
“The 5,500 interns under this flagship programme are among the many young people whose lives are being transformed through meaningful work in the building sector,” he said.
The Affordable Housing Programme, which targets the construction of 240,000 housing units nationwide, has already generated over 500,000 jobs, Kindiki noted, describing the project as a catalyst for grassroots economic transformation.
He added that the Government is simultaneously investing in multi-billion shilling infrastructure projects, spanning modern markets, roads, airports, seaports, railways, energy, and water systems, all aimed at steering Kenya toward a modern, first-world economy.
Kindiki further announced that the Government will implement consequence management policies to ensure safety and accountability in the housing and construction sectors.
These measures will hold professionals and agencies responsible for any decisions that compromise safety standards.
The internship programme, launched by President William Ruto and the DP at State House, targets a wide range of professionals in the construction industry, including engineers, architects, planners, ICT practitioners, finance managers, environmentalists, surveyors, and skilled construction workers.
“This initiative not only equips our youth with critical skills but also contributes directly to the nation’s development agenda,” Kindiki concluded.
The programme reflects Kenya Kwanza’s commitment to creating employment opportunities while advancing infrastructure development, signaling a strategic push to modernize the country’s urban and rural landscapes.
