Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has publicly accused former deputy president and Democratic Congress Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua of attempting to intimidate her into joining his new political outfit, insisting she will remain in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) until 2027.
In a statement shared on X on Monday, Wamuchomba said the alleged pressure mirrors past experiences when Gachagua served as deputy president.
She claimed he previously tried to intimidate her after she voted against the Finance Bill 2023, a move that put her at odds with sections of the government leadership.
The outspoken MP dismissed claims that DCP is a dominant “Mlima” party that leaders from the region must join.
She questioned the party’s legitimacy, arguing that records at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) do not list Gachagua as an official party leader or office holder.
Wamuchomba also took aim at leaders she accused of pushing the DCP agenda while retaining their positions in UDA.
She singled out Kiambu Senator Karungo Thangwa, claiming he has been used to demean leaders who refuse to associate with the new party despite still being elected on a UDA ticket.
To test DCP’s political strength, Wamuchomba challenged senators John Methu, Karungo Thangwa and Joe Nyutu to resign from their seats and seek fresh mandates under the new party.
The MP concluded by firmly ruling out any plans to defect, stating she remains committed to UDA until the end of her term.
Her remarks reflect growing tensions within Kenya’s ruling coalition as realignments take shape ahead of the next general election.
