Chaos unfolded in Magere last night as Uganda’s opposition leader, Bobi Wine, narrowly escaped an overnight raid by military and police officers.

In a statement on social media, the National Unity Platform (NUP) president described a tense operation where security forces cut power, disabled CCTV cameras, and hovered helicopters over his home.

Bobi Wine confirmed that he is currently in hiding, while his wife and other family members remain confined under house arrest.

The opposition leader said the nationwide internet shutdown contributed to widespread speculation about his fate, with neighbours mistakenly assuming he had been abducted.

The raid follows escalating tensions over Uganda’s disputed presidential election.

Bobi Wine reiterated his rejection of the results announced by Electoral Commission chair Simon Byabakama, calling them fraudulent and lacking legitimacy.

He accused authorities of orchestrating ballot stuffing, militarising polling stations, and detaining opposition leaders and election officials.

Beyond election irregularities, Bobi Wine condemned the killing of civilians who protested peacefully, asserting that Ugandans have a constitutional right to demonstrate against electoral malpractices.

He further claimed that NUP candidates across the country are facing targeted harassment, despite clear evidence of their victories in various constituencies.

Despite the crackdown, the opposition leader expressed resolve, insisting that attempts to suppress dissent would not succeed.

“The people of Uganda will ultimately win,” Bobi Wine declared, signalling that his party and supporters remain determined to challenge what he described as a violent and illegitimate takeover of the electoral process.
