Political scientist and former Azimio strategist Mutahi Ngunyi has stirred controversy by claiming that former president Uhuru Kenyatta did not genuinely want Raila Odinga to win the 2022 general election, despite publicly endorsing him.
In a post on X, Ngunyi alleged that Raila’s candidature was part of a larger political strategy that ultimately favoured President William Ruto.
“Junet is innocent. Uhuru wanted Raila to lose in 2022. The architect of this failure was Matiang’i. I was there. I saw it,” Ngunyi stated.
As a strategist within the Azimio la Umoja campaign, Ngunyi’s insights carry weight, though his claims remain unverified and have not been corroborated by documentary evidence or responses from the individuals mentioned.
According to Ngunyi, the alleged strategy aimed to neutralise a strong opposition while consolidating political power elsewhere.
He argued that this would have cleared the path for a smooth future transition to Matiang’i, leaving little room for effective opposition.
So far, Uhuru Kenyatta, Fred Matiang’i, and Raila Odinga have not publicly addressed Ngunyi’s allegations.
Analysts note that the claims underscore ongoing tensions and internal disputes within opposition circles, highlighting the challenges of unity ahead of future elections.
Experts caution that they should be treated as claims rather than confirmed facts, even as they reignite debate over the dynamics behind one of Kenya’s most closely contested elections
