Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has raised pointed questions over President William Ruto’s recent call for new laws that could impose the death penalty on drug traffickers, linking the debate to broader financial scandals.

Njiru asked why the president has only recently acknowledged the scale of drug trafficking along the Kenyan coast.

On X, Njiru highlighted potential connections between local drug syndicates and the Minnesota money laundering scandal, questioning why the Americans have suddenly taken an interest.

He asked whether these illicit funds, reportedly involving billions invested in Eastleigh real estate, could have played a role in financing Kenya’s 2022 elections and who the real beneficiaries were.

Njiru also questioned the timing of Ruto’s anti-drug push, suggesting it may be a strategic attempt to shield his administration from international scrutiny.

“Is the president genuinely targeting drug cartels, or is this a political move after witnessing global consequences faced by leaders linked to money laundering and corruption?” Njiru said.

The lawyer raised concerns over Kenya’s withdrawal as a NON-NATO ally, warning that the move could impact Ruto’s international standing if links between local and global financial scandals are proven.

He also criticized the silence of the Asset Recovery Agency on the Minnesota syndicate, asking why such massive funds appear untraced.

“Before the chicken comes home to roost, the public deserves transparency,” Njiru said, urging full disclosure on the alleged flow of laundered funds and their impact on national politics.

The remarks come as President Ruto reaffirms his commitment to tackle drug trafficking decisively, promising a stricter legal framework.
