Ibrahim Ali Kalla has been sentenced to two years in prison after being found in illegal possession of commercial electric detonators, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
The explosives were disguised as personal effects when intercepted at the Archer’s Post multi-agency roadblock on January 26, 2023.
Following his arrest, Kalla was taken to Isiolo Police Station, where the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) launched an in-depth investigation.
He was arraigned on February 6, 2023, pleaded not guilty, and was released on a bond of Sh200,000 or cash bail of Sh100,000.
During the trial, prosecutors called eight witnesses, whose testimonies helped establish that Kalla knowingly possessed the controlled explosives.
On December 19, 2025, the court ruled him guilty and canceled his bond, remanding him as the court prepared for sentencing.
Yesterday, trial Magistrate Hon. Maureen Odhiambo delivered the final judgment, fining Kalla Sh200,000. He will serve two years in prison if the fine is not paid.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reiterated that commercial electric detonators are strictly regulated under Kenyan law. Unauthorized possession carries severe legal consequences, including imprisonment and hefty fines.
Authorities said the conviction serves as a warning to the public and reinforces ongoing efforts to curb the illegal movement of explosives, which pose significant security risks.
Citizens are urged to report any suspicious activities involving controlled explosives to help maintain public safety.
