BREAKING: Education CS Announces When Schools Will Be Opening For Term One in 2026

Public basic education schools across the country will reopen on Monday, January 5, 2026, as the government moves to kick off the new academic year with the release of KSh44.2 billion in capitation funds.

In a statement issued on January 2, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba confirmed that all primary, junior, and secondary schools are expected to resume learning after the Christmas and New Year holidays. 

He said Ministry of Education field officers, working with county and regional education directors, will be on the ground to ensure schools adhere to the reopening calendar.

The government has released a total of KSh44,245,066,500.85 to support learning activities in public schools during Term One. 

The allocation includes KSh3.7 billion for Free Primary Education, KSh14.45 billion for Free Day Junior School Education, and KSh26.08 billion for Free Day Secondary Education.

Ogamba said the funds are meant to ensure smooth operations in schools, including teaching and co-curricular activities, as learners return to class.

The Cabinet Secretary also gave an update on the placement of Grade 10 learners under the Competency-Based Curriculum. 

The first revision of senior school placements was completed on December 29, 2025, with joining instructions made available online from December 30. 

Learners seeking a review of their placement have until January 9, 2026, to submit their applications.

Grade 10 learners will report to their respective senior schools from January 12, 2026.

Ogamba further assured parents that fees in senior schools remain unchanged, noting that the government will continue providing capitation at KSh22,244 per learner annually.

He warned school heads against introducing extra charges, saying the Ministry will take action against any illegal levies or misuse of public funds.
