Doubts are growing over the circumstances of the crash that killed former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo on Saturday, December 13, as legal and public scrutiny intensifies over the only eyewitness account.
Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru raised a series of pointed questions on X, highlighting perceived gaps in the official narrative provided by the Climax Coaches bus driver.
Njiru asked: “Why is the bus driver, who allegedly crashed into CJ, the only eyewitness to the incident? Where have the 65 purported passengers disappeared to? Are you suggesting that absolutely no one else saw this alleged crash happen? How is it possible that the bus sustained no significant damage from the alleged impact? What other evidence supports the driver’s account, given these inconsistencies? Could there be more to this story that we’re not being told?”
Police reports indicate Jirongo’s Mercedes‑Benz E350 entered the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai from a petrol station and veered into the oncoming lane of the bus, causing a fatal collision.
The bus driver, Tirus Kamau Githinji, told investigators he braked to prevent overturning the bus, ensuring the safety of the 65 passengers, and only learned the identity of the car’s occupant after police arrived.
Members of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and other observers have called for a thorough probe, including forensic analysis, CCTV review, and passenger interviews to establish a clear and verified account of the events.
