During the burial of former MP Cyrus Jirongo on Tuesday, former senator George Khaniri, who co-chaired the funeral committee, questioned the official account of Jirongo’s death, calling for a thorough forensic investigation.

Khaniri dismissed reports suggesting the death resulted from a normal traffic accident, describing the circumstances as “suspicious.”

“There are so many grey areas surrounding the cause of our friend Jirongo’s death, and we are demanding a private investigation into what actually killed him. We shall continue asking questions until we are told the truth because we believe this was not a normal death,” Khaniri said, emphasizing that the late politician’s passing warranted deeper scrutiny.

Khaniri, a prominent Tiriki leader, urged his clansmen to carry out cultural rites aimed at invoking accountability and exposing those allegedly responsible.

He described Jirongo as a hero committed to uniting the Luhya community, noting that his legacy went beyond politics.

The former senator’s statements highlight growing unease among Jirongo’s supporters, many of whom feel that the official narrative does not fully explain the circumstances of his death.

Khaniri’s call for a forensic audit reflects wider concerns over transparency and accountability in high-profile cases.

Jirongo, who served as a Member of Parliament for Lugari and was a known advocate for Luhya unity, was laid to rest amidst emotional tributes from political leaders, family, and community members.

Khaniri’s remarks were met with strong nods from attendees, underlining the community’s demand for clarity and justice.

As questions mount, observers say the push for an independent probe may reignite debates about the treatment of political figures and the role of cultural practices in seeking justice, highlighting the delicate balance between tradition and formal investigative processes.

Khaniri concluded by urging unity among the Luhya, while insisting that the search for truth regarding Jirongo’s death must continue until all uncertainties are resolved.
