Lawyer Wahome Thuku as entered the growing dispute within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following claims by senior party leaders that former President Uhuru Kenyatta is interfering in the party’s affairs ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In remarks shared on social media, Thuku pushed back against accusations levelled by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who is also ODM’s national chairperson, and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.

The two leaders have accused Kenyatta of funding the party with the intention of influencing its direction and strategic decisions as it prepares for the 2027 polls.

Thuku argued that the criticism of Kenyatta is misplaced and stems from unresolved anger over the 2022 presidential election outcome.

He maintained that President William Ruto decisively defeated ODM leader Raila Odinga and that Kenyatta should not be faulted for refusing to interfere with the electoral process.

“William Samoei Ruto thrashed Raila Odinga hands down in 2022,” Thuku stated, adding that ODM’s problem with Kenyatta is that he “didn’t do anything illegal to top up the difference.”

According to Thuku, the accusations now being directed at the former president reflect frustration rather than evidence of wrongdoing.

The remarks come at a time when ODM is
experiencing internal debate over its leadership, funding, and political posture following its cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Wanga and Junet have publicly questioned the role of external influence in shaping the party’s future, warning against decisions driven by individual interests rather than collective party consensus.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the exchange highlights widening cracks within ODM and raises fresh questions about loyalty, accountability, and the role of former presidents in active party politics.
