Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has thrown down the gauntlet, urging President William Ruto to pick a female running mate in 2027 based on talent — not just for appearances.

In a fiery interview with the Daily Nation on Tuesday, Waiguru said women have proven they can handle the highest offices in the land.

“Not as tokenism, but as a right,” she added, sending a clear message to Ruto and his inner circle.

Waiguru stopped short of naming a preferred candidate, but her call comes amid heated debates over who will fill key spots in the next administration.

With political analysts predicting a shake-up in the Mt. Kenya power bloc, her words are unlikely to be ignored.

“Leadership should reflect merit and inclusion. Every sector of the population should have a seat at the table,” she said, highlighting the growing demand for women in top government roles.

While Ruto has hinted at the possibility of a female deputy, he has not confirmed any decisions.

Waiguru’s push reinforces a nationwide call for leadership that mirrors Kenya’s diversity — and not just in name.

As the 2027 race heats up, all eyes are now on Ruto: will he pick a woman who can truly deliver, or settle for a symbolic gesture?
