The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has finally spoken on the tragic death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, dismissing claims of foul play in the fatal incident.

DCI Director Mohamed Amin said investigations so far show that Jirongo died in a road traffic accident and not as a result of any criminal act.

He made the remarks on Christmas Day while on a security surveillance tour in Kwale County.

“This is a case that is under active investigation, and there was no foul play. So far, investigations show the death was purely a traffic accident,” Amin said.

Jirongo’s death had triggered widespread speculation, with social media awash with claims suggesting sabotage or political motives.

His high-profile past in politics and business placed the incident under intense public scrutiny.

The DCI boss said detectives had reviewed preliminary findings and found no evidence pointing to criminal involvement. He added that standard investigative procedures were still ongoing to document all aspects of the crash.

Amin urged Kenyans to avoid spreading unverified information, warning that speculation could mislead investigations and cause unnecessary distress to the bereaved family.

He said official updates would be shared once investigations are formally concluded.

Cyrus Jirongo served as Lugari MP from 1997 to 2002 and remained a well-known figure in Kenya’s political and business landscape.

News of his death sparked messages of condolence from leaders across the political divide.

For now, the DCI maintains that there is no criminal angle in the case, insisting that available evidence points to a tragic road accident.

Authorities say a final report will be issued after all investigations are completed.
