In a continued push to curb armed conflicts, four residents of Elgeyo Marakwet County voluntarily surrendered illegal firearms to Embobut Police Station yesterday.

The handover marks another step in community-led initiatives supporting law enforcement and local peace-building.

The National Police Service (NPS) said the seized weapons have been secured for verification and further action.

Authorities highlighted that voluntary disarmament campaigns are critical in a county that has, historically, experienced sporadic violent disputes over resources and local leadership.

Police spokesperson confirmed the operation, noting that public cooperation with security agencies is key to reducing the circulation of unlicensed firearms.

“The voluntary surrender of these weapons reflects growing commitment from residents to maintain peace and security in the region,” the NPS stated.

Elgeyo Marakwet’s security challenges have often intersected with political and community tensions, particularly during election periods when disputes over local representation and resource allocation have occasionally escalated.

The latest arms surrender aligns with national efforts to promote stability in counties with histories of inter-community clashes.

Local leaders have supported the campaign, encouraging other residents to hand over firearms and comply with Kenya’s strict arms control regulations.

The authorities reiterated that all individuals who voluntarily turn in illegal weapons will be handled in accordance with the law, avoiding punitive action when the surrender is lawful and timely.

The ongoing initiative complements broader government programs aimed at enhancing security, including community policing and awareness drives.

Police reports indicate that similar voluntary disarmament events have taken place across other parts of the county, showing increasing public trust in law enforcement initiatives.

Officials continue to appeal to citizens to report or surrender unlicensed guns, emphasizing that cooperation is essential for reducing armed incidents and fostering safer communities.

The NPS underlined that such proactive measures contribute directly to sustaining peace and preventing violent outbreaks in northern Kenya.
