COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli on Wednesday called on Kenyans to back the recently approved National Infrastructure Fund, warning that resistance to the initiative could cost lives, especially during the festive season when road accidents are on the rise.
Speaking on X, Atwoli described opposition to the fund as “stupid and primitive,” noting that some groups are even planning to challenge it in court.
He emphasized the urgent need for investment in infrastructure to prevent avoidable tragedies.
“At a time when Nairobi has been cut off from several parts of western Kenya due to a road accident that proper infrastructure could have prevented, it is unfortunate that some individuals oppose measures designed to save lives,” Atwoli stated.
The unionist highlighted that the National Infrastructure Fund aims to improve road networks across the country, enhance traffic management, and reduce fatalities that have become a recurring problem, particularly during festive travel peaks.
Road safety officials report that accidents during the holiday season have historically surged, straining emergency response systems and causing significant disruption to transport routes.
Atwoli’s comments come amid growing public concern over road carnage and calls for stronger government action to enhance safety.
He urged both citizens and policymakers to recognize the fund as a crucial step toward safer travel, arguing that adequate investment in infrastructure is key to preventing the kind of accidents that continue to claim lives nationwide.
