ODM Communications Director Philip Etale has mourned the passing of former Lugari MPs Hon. Cyrus Jirongo and Hon. Dr. Enoch Kibunguchy, highlighting their legacy of respectful and mature politics in the constituency.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Etale recalled how the two politicians shaped Lugari’s political landscape with dignity, contrasting their approach with earlier contentious elections.
“These two gentlemen respected democracy and exercised humility at the height of their campaigns,” he wrote.
Etale reflected on the 2002 election, when Dr. Kibunguchy challenged the well-established Jirongo, then Minister for Rural Development.
He noted that Jirongo’s conduct during the campaign was exemplary, avoiding violence, intimidation, or hiring goons, and engaging his rival with respect.
Etale recalled witnessing a gesture of sportsmanship where Jirongo personally greeted Dr. Kibunguchy during a rally, reinforcing a culture of gentlemanly politics.
The ODM director further described how Jirongo accepted defeat gracefully in 2002, returning to his business and later reclaiming his seat in 2007 through a calm and orderly campaign.
“The Lugari we had… was one of smooth campaigns, free of fist fights or disruptions, led by men who understood the value of humility and strategic reflection,” Etale noted.
The statement paid homage to the political maturity and civility both leaders demonstrated, emphasizing their contribution to a more stable democratic environment in Lugari.
Etale described their passing as a significant loss to the constituency and the wider political fraternity.
Jirongo and Kibunguchy leave behind a legacy of respectful competition and principled leadership, Etale said, urging current and future politicians to emulate their example. “Go well, our seniors. Rest in peace,” he concluded.
