Masalani Airport in Garissa County captured national attention last week when President William Ruto and other senior officials landed there to attend the wedding of National Intelligence Service Director-General Noordin Haji’s son.
The small airstrip, located about 205 kilometres from Garissa town, became a talking point due to its upgraded facilities and aesthetic improvements, drawing praise from political commentators and local residents.
ODM Communications Director Philip Etale has described the airport as an example of how development can occur without fanfare.
“This is not JKIA nor an airport in a busy urban town like Kakamega, but Masalani, a small commercial town. People are realizing development without their leaders shouting,” he said in a post on X.
Etale contrasted the airstrip’s quiet progress with the often loud and performative political activities in other regions.
Masalani’s emergence as a functional regional hub is part of broader efforts by the Garissa County government to improve local infrastructure and connectivity.
The airport’s visibility during the high-profile wedding has sparked discussions on social media and local forums about the importance of prioritizing practical development over political posturing.
