Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has dismissed recent allegations that he is collaborating with former President Uhuru Kenyatta to influence the party’s internal affairs.
He made the remarks on Tuesday during the burial of former Lugari MP and Cabinet Minister Cyrus Jirongo.
Sifuna’s comments came after Suna East MP Junet Mohamed alleged that Mr Kenyatta was quietly funding ODM to sway its decision-making.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga had earlier accused the former president of fostering divisions within the party. Responding to these claims, Sifuna emphasized that they were baseless and aimed at deflecting attention from other internal alignments.
“There are people holding meetings in Kilgoris, trying to sell ODM to William Ruto. We called them out, and suddenly they are also pointing fingers back at us, claiming that I am trying to sell ODM to Uhuru,” Sifuna stated.
He challenged those leveling accusations to produce any evidence of a secret alliance with the former president.
“Have you seen me dancing on podiums with Uhuru the way those people are dancing with Ruto?” he asked.
The Nairobi senator argued that ODM remains an independent opposition party committed to its principles and membership structures.
He stressed that internal disagreements should be addressed within party mechanisms rather than through public claims, warning that attempts to drag ODM into external alliances without consent could weaken its position in the national political landscape.
ODM, historically Kenya’s oldest opposition party, has experienced recurring tensions over leadership and influence.
The recent allegations reflect a broader pattern of contestation, especially as the party positions itself ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
Sifuna’s remarks underscore the ongoing struggle within the party to maintain unity while navigating complex political alliances in a multiparty environment.
