Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has announced the safe return of a Kenyan woman who endured severe hardship in Saudi Arabia after running away from her employer.
Josephine Wanjiru Mumbi, originally from Nanyuki, arrived back in Kenya this week with the support of the state department of diaspora and the organization Hunja Wa Hunja.
According to MP Wamuchomba’s statement shared on X, Josephine traveled to Saudi Arabia in 2021 to work as a house manager.
She had signed a formal employment contract but was allegedly deceived into abandoning her job.
Following her escape, she became homeless, surviving on the streets while caring for a baby. Reports indicate she suffered both mental and physical abuse during her time abroad.
“From the streets of Saudi Arabia to back home successfully. Thank you Hunja Wa Hunja and the state department of diaspora for your help and support,” MP Wamuchomba posted, highlighting the role of government and civil society in facilitating her return.
Josephine’s case shows the risks faced by Kenyan domestic workers in the Middle East, where reports of exploitation, harassment, and abuse are not uncommon.
MP Wamuchomba also issued a cautionary message to Kenyan girls seeking employment abroad: adherence to contractual agreements and proper vetting of recruitment agents are essential.
She commended Hunja Wa Hunja for their intervention, emphasizing the importance of supporting initiatives that assist distressed nationals overseas.
