Human rights activist Mulinge Muteti has issued a public statement following his release after being arrested and charged over a social media post.
In a statement shared on X, Muteti said he was arrested last Friday by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at his rural home.
He stated that he was first taken to the DCI headquarters before being transferred to Muthaiga Police Station.
“I am free. I was arrested last Friday (by DCI officers) in my rural home, taken to DCI headquarters and later transferred to Muthaiga Police Station,” Muteti said in the post.
He confirmed that he was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday, where he was charged with publishing false information online.
The court granted him cash bail of Sh15,000, allowing his release pending further legal proceedings.
“I was arraigned at Milimani Law Courts on Monday and released on Kes 15,000 cash bail. Thank you all for your concern,” he added.
Muteti’s arrest followed a statement by the DCI indicating that he was charged under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act. His case is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on December 30, 2025.
The activist used his statement to acknowledge public concern following his arrest, but did not comment further on the charges or the ongoing court process.
