The Ministry of Health has called on Kenyans to adopt strict health precautions during the festive season, citing increased travel and crowded social events as key factors that could accelerate the spread of infectious diseases.

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni emphasized that simple preventive measures can protect individuals, families, and communities.

Festive periods in Kenya often see heightened movement across counties, large family gatherings, religious events, and busy markets.

While these activities are central to holiday celebrations, they also create environments conducive to the transmission of illnesses, particularly respiratory infections and gastrointestinal diseases

PS Muthoni highlighted that infections can spread quickly through close contact in crowded settings, shared utensils, and poorly ventilated indoor spaces.

She urged Kenyans to maintain personal hygiene, including regular handwashing and the use of hand sanitizers, as well as covering coughs and sneezes.

The Ministry advised those experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea to avoid attending public events and to seek medical attention promptly if their condition worsens.

For gatherings, officials recommended holding events outdoors or in well-ventilated areas, limiting the duration, and avoiding overcrowding.

Food safety remains a priority, with the PS urging proper cooking, storage, and handling practices.

Sharing of cups, plates, and utensils should be avoided to reduce contamination risks.

Vulnerable groups, including older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses, are advised to take extra precautions.

Vaccinations were also highlighted as a critical preventive tool.

“Keeping recommended vaccines up to date and following local health guidance are essential steps in preventing disease spread,” PS Muthoni said.

Kenyans travelling during the festive season are advised to observe hand hygiene and follow destination-specific health advisories.

Individuals who are unwell are discouraged from travelling to prevent potential transmission to others.

The Ministry of Health reiterated that responsible celebrations—marked by hygiene, vigilance, and adherence to public health guidance—can significantly limit disease outbreaks over the festive season.

PS Muthoni urged all Kenyans to prioritise health alongside holiday festivities.
