The Ministry of Health has announced urgent measures to address the rising misuse of the “blue pill,” a prescription-only medicine, which has been linked to fatalities among Kenyan men.

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni revealed the government’s steps during a statement on X on Tuesday.

The blue pill, commonly known as sildenafil, is intended to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

Health officials warn that using it without medical supervision, especially alongside nitrates or certain blood pressure and heart medications, can trigger life-threatening complications such as heart attacks and strokes.

PS Muthoni emphasized that men should consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking the drug.

To curb the surge in abuse, the Ministry has implemented a monitoring system requiring wholesalers to document and report sales of prescription medicines to retailers.

Additionally, audits and inspections of pharmacies are underway to ensure controlled dispensing and adherence to prescription regulations.

The Ministry is also conducting public education campaigns to inform consumers about the dangers of unprescribed use.

Recent reports indicate that several deaths have been linked to self-medication with sildenafil, highlighting the risks of acquiring the drug from unauthorized sources.

Health authorities stress that despite its reputation as a performance enhancer, the medicine poses serious health hazards if misused.

PS Muthoni called on the public to remain vigilant and avoid purchasing blue pills without valid prescriptions.

She also urged pharmacies and health practitioners to strictly enforce dispensing regulations to prevent further fatalities.

The Ministry confirmed that the monitoring and inspection exercises are ongoing and will continue until compliance across the pharmaceutical sector is achieved.
