The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the death of former politician Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, who died in a road traffic accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

The collision occurred at approximately 2:19 a.m. on 13th December 2025 at the Karai area.

Preliminary reports show that Jirongo’s vehicle, registration KCZ 305U, was involved in a head-on collision with a public service vehicle (PSV) bus, registration KCU 576A, operated by Climax Company Ltd.

The impact pushed Jirongo’s car roughly 25 metres from the point of collision, while the bus came to a stop about 50 metres away, according to the DCI.

A team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory visited the crash site to collect evidence.

CCTV footage retrieved from the nearby Eagol Petrol Station captured Jirongo entering the station at 2:18 a.m., exiting without refuelling, and turning right toward Nairobi shortly before the PSV bus struck his vehicle.

The PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base and is currently out on cash bail.

He is required to report back to the station on 22nd December for further police action.

Investigators have also interviewed the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant to establish a clear timeline of the events.

Further inquiries are planned, including statements from passengers on the Climax Company bus and other witnesses along the highway.

Police are also reviewing Jirongo’s movements prior to the crash, including interactions at a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

The forensic team will revisit the scene for additional examinations, and the final case file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review.

The DCI extended condolences to Jirongo’s family and assured the public that the investigation will be conducted impartially, in compliance with the Constitution of Kenya and the rule of law.
