Cherargei Presses UDA to Enforce Discipline After Khalwale Backed Opponent in Malava

Nandi Senator Kiprotich Cherargei has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of party discipline within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), arguing that Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale violated party loyalty during the recent Malava Constituency by-election.

His remarks, issued in a statement on X, follow a divisive campaign period in which Khalwale supported an opposition-aligned candidate instead of the party’s nominee.

The Malava contest, held to fill a parliamentary vacancy, was closely watched as part of UDA’s broader push to strengthen its foothold in Western Kenya.

While the ruling party eventually secured the seat through David Ndakwa, Khalwale chose to campaign for Seth Panyako of DAP-Kenya, a move that triggered internal criticism and raised questions about unity within the ruling coalition.

In his statement, Cherargei argued that Khalwale’s choice amounted to defying the party that sponsored him to the Senate.

He said the behaviour contravened expectations set out in the Political Parties Act, which obligates elected officials to align with party positions unless formally released.

According to Cherargei, action against Khalwale would reinforce respect for party decisions and deter future instances of dissent.

He further claimed that Khalwale had issued remarks he considered hostile to both UDA and the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Without detailing specific comments, Cherargei insisted the party should treat such conduct seriously and “restore political hygiene” by taking corrective steps.

The senator added that strong internal discipline was necessary as political coalitions begin preparing for the 2027 campaigns.

Khalwale, a prominent figure in Western Kenya politics, has not issued a formal response.

His decision to support Panyako surprised many within the ruling alliance, given his previous role in championing UDA’s presence in the region.
