Lawyer Dr John Khaminwa was on Thursday recognized as the 2025 Jurist of the Year by the International Council of Jurists (ICJ), an honor highlighting his enduring contributions to justice, human rights, and the rule of law.
The award ceremony, held virtually, celebrated Khaminwa’s decades-long legal career and his unwavering commitment to upholding constitutional principles.
In its announcement, ICJ stated: “Congratulations, Dr. John Khaminwa, for being the 2025 Jurist of the Year. We hold you up today with pride, gratitude, and immense respect for your lifelong commitment to justice, human rights, and the rule of law. You have affirmed, time and again, that courage and integrity remain the bedrock of a just society.”
Prominent Kenyan lawyer Prof Migai Akech expressed admiration for Khaminwa’s achievements, emphasizing his relevance and influence in the country’s legal landscape.
“I celebrate the indefatigable Khaminwa. The Law Society of Kenya should and must celebrate Khaminwa for his contributions to advancing the rule of law. There are individuals the LSK must honor, without requiring them to apply for rank of senior counsel. Khaminwa is one of them,” Akech said.
Akech further praised Khaminwa’s enduring passion for law.
“It is amazing that Khaminwa still practices law. He has the intellectual enthusiasm of a man fresh out of law school. That is very rare and truly special. He retains enthusiasm for law and justice, and I would be truly honored to emulate him,” he added.
Dr Khaminwa’s career includes notable moments defending activists such as Raila Odinga, Kenneth Matiba, and Charles Rubia during former President Daniel arap Moi’s administration, when he faced detention for his legal work.
Akech described Khaminwa as “a very fine mind” with a deep engagement in legal discourse and academic excellence, noting his alumni status at New York University Law School.
