Siaya Governor James Orengo has urged leaders across East Africa to take a moment of reflection as Tanzania faces continued unrest following Wednesday’s elections.
The country is in turmoil after Samia Suluhu was declared the winner with more than 31 million votes, prompting protests that have now entered their fourth day.
Orengo specifically highlighted the courage of Tanzania’s younger generation, who have been at the forefront of demonstrations calling for fairness and transparency.
He also pointed to the display of former Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga’s portraits in Dar es Salaam, suggesting it signals admiration for progressive politics across the region.
“I wish to express solidarity with and support for the valiant men and women of Tanzania. East African leaders must introspect. Glad to see portraits of Raila Odinga flying high in Dar appreciating his progressive politics. The people of Tanzania will overcome,” Orengo wrote on X.
Protests have spread across major cities including Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and Mwanza.
Many demonstrators, particularly young voters, have voiced concerns over alleged irregularities in the election process and are demanding dialogue with authorities.
Security forces have been deployed to manage the crowds, though demonstrations continue to attract significant attention.
