Former state agency chairperson Odoyo Owidi has publicly addressed Siaya Governor James Orengo, urging him to reconsider his political alignment and approach to leadership within the Luo community.
The statement, posted on Facebook, highlights Owidi’s concerns over the perceived opposition-driven stance of senior Luo leaders and the implications for the region ahead of future elections.
Owidi reflected on Orengo’s tenure as lands minister in the Raila-Kibaki coalition government, noting a history of public criticism against the very government he served.
He described this pattern as indicative of Orengo’s consistent position in opposition politics, saying such a stance has contributed to divisions within the Luo political bloc.
The former board chair also took aim at Kalonzo Musyoka, accusing the former vice president of betraying the late former prime minister Raila Odinga and Luo interests during critical periods, including the post-election crisis in 2007.
Owidi claimed Kalonzo’s political decisions during that time were self-serving and undermined efforts to protect the community.
Owidi criticized Orengo’s recent hosting of Kalonzo in Bondo, suggesting the move was a strategic attempt to appeal to Luo voters rather than a demonstration of genuine loyalty to regional leadership.
He emphasized the importance of recognizing political debts and alliances, particularly the support President William Ruto has extended to Luo leaders over the years.
The message comes amid ongoing realignments in Luo-Nyanza politics, as leaders debate strategy, loyalty, and cooperation with national figures.
Owidi’s statement shows tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the broader community over the direction of political leadership and representation.
