The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Youth League has rejected circulating online narratives suggesting a rift between party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga and other senior figures.
The youth wing described the claims as misinformation aimed at discrediting the party’s leadership ahead of Kenya’s forthcoming political realignments.
In a statement shared on X on Thursday, ODM Youth League Secretary Kasmuel McCoure addressed a viral video popularly referred to as the “cake saga,” showing Dr. Oginga spitting out icing at a public event. McCoure clarified that the footage was misleading and taken out of context, noting that the party leader rarely consumes cake or icing.
“The clip has been used to falsely portray Dr. Oginga as being in conflict with senior leaders, including the President,” McCoure said.
He emphasised that any genuine disagreements within ODM would be handled publicly through formal channels rather than online speculation.
McCoure also tackled a letter circulating on social media, purportedly authored by ODM members questioning the party’s direction.
He dismissed the document as fabricated, attributing it to individuals who had previously attempted to undermine the Youth League and were now allegedly trying to influence grassroots opinion with false narratives.
The party has faced internal tensions in recent months, particularly over organisational structures and the mobilisation of young members. Social media has amplified these disputes, raising concerns about misinformation shaping public perception at a time when parties are strategising ahead of Kenya’s 2027 elections.
Despite the controversies, McCoure reiterated the Youth League’s loyalty to Dr. Oginga, whom he described as the legitimate leader of ODM.
He assured that all official communications and directives would continue to come from party leadership, urging members to ignore unverified content circulating online.
