The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has named Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as its acting party leader, a decision announced by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir on Thursday.
The appointment, made by the party's National Executive Council (NEC), takes effect immediately and serves as a bridge until a permanent successor is elected.
Oburu, Raila Odinga's elder brother, steps into the role amid national mourning for the veteran politician.Raila Odinga, 80, died on October 14 in Kochi, India, during medical treatment, leaving a void in Kenya's opposition landscape.
ODM, founded in 2005 as a coalition for democratic reforms, relied heavily on Raila's charisma and strategic acumen to challenge ruling coalitions.
The NEC convened urgently to reflect on his legacy and ensure seamless operations during the funeral preparations.
Nassir, ODM's deputy party leader, detailed the process on X, stating, "As the ODM Deputy Party Leader, I joined fellow senior officials for a special sitting of our National Executive Council which reflected on the life and legacy of our departed Party Leader, H. E. Raila Amolo Odinga."
He continued, "The Council committed to align fully with the national protocol guiding his State Funeral, and for continuity of leadership, designated Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga as Acting Party Leader until such a time that the party organs convene to make a substantive decision."
Nassir emphasized resilience, adding, "ODM remains united, steady, and strong; guided by the ideals of justice, equality, and the unbreakable spirit of our people."
The NEC's unanimous endorsement highlights Oburu's long-standing role as a founding member and advisor.
