Zimbabwe Opposition Leader Nelson Chamisa Mourns Raila Odinga, Hails His Democratic Legacy

Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has expressed deep condolences following the death of Kenyan political titan Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a “larger than life gladiator” whose lifelong struggle for democracy inspired Africans across the continent.

Chamisa, in a heartfelt post on X, reflected on Raila’s role in upholding democratic ideals, noting that his relentless fight against authoritarianism left a lasting mark not only in Kenya but throughout Africa.

“His consistent fight for democracy in his entire life should continue to inspire present and future Africans who yearn for a prosperous and stable Africa whose foundation is steeped in good governance and democracy,” Chamisa stated.

The Zimbabwean leader recalled a personal encounter with Raila during a 2017 visit to Kenya alongside the late President Morgan Tsvangirai and his wife.

Chamisa described being welcomed with “warmth and grace,” emblematic of Raila’s famed African hospitality.

He recounted how Raila assisted in mending relations between President Tsvangirai and a business associate and personally contributed to settle mounting medical bills for the late president, demonstrating his generosity and concern for others.

“Baba Odinga was a reconciler, a bridge-builder, a unifier,” Chamisa wrote, praising Raila’s commitment to fostering unity across political and social divides.

He noted that Raila’s compassion extended beyond borders, highlighting his travel to Buhera, Zimbabwe, to pay respects following Tsvangirai’s death.

“His love for Africa and its people transcended man-made borders. A true democracy champion,” Chamisa added.

Public reaction across the continent has highlighted Raila’s enduring influence.

Many leaders and citizens alike have paid tribute to his role in advancing democratic governance and advocating for social justice.

In Kenya, political figures and grassroots supporters have echoed Chamisa’s sentiment, emphasizing Raila’s dedication to public service and national unity.

Chamisa concluded his tribute by celebrating Raila’s legacy: “Rest in Power, Baba, Africa has lost a legend. May your legacy live on for generations to come. All glory be to God, The Almighty, for the gift of life.”
