On Thursday, October 16, 2025, the National Assembly convened a special session to honor the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away on October 15 at the age of 80 in India.
Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah delivered a heartfelt eulogy, describing Odinga as a Pan-Africanist, reconciler, and unifier whose dedication to the nation surpassed personal ambition.
Ichung’wah emphasized that Odinga's political journey was defined by an unwavering commitment to justice, democracy, and the common good.
"Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga was not just a leader, he was a great Pan-Africanist, a reconciliator, and a unifier whose love for country rose far above personal ambition," Ichung’wah stated.
He highlighted Odinga's consistent choice of peace over division and dialogue over discord, underscoring the former Prime Minister's role in fostering national unity.
The Majority Leader further noted that Odinga's ability to rise above political rivalry for the sake of national cohesion made him not only a statesman of Kenya but also a beacon of hope across the African continent.
"In every struggle he led, his heart beat for Kenya, his spirit for Africa, and his legacy will forever be one of courage, reconciliation, and unwavering patriotism," Ichung’wah concluded.
The parliamentary session was part of a national tribute to Odinga, who was a prominent figure in Kenya's political landscape, having served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and leading the opposition in subsequent years.
His death has prompted widespread mourning across the country and beyond.
