Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has issued a public apology to the late Raila Odinga, retracting his past remarks made during the heated 2022 election campaigns.
The legislator made the statement on X just hours before the burial of the former Prime Minister.
Barasa acknowledged that his words during the campaign period were harsh and expressed deep regret over them.
He described the apology as a personal reflection and a gesture of respect as the country prepares to bid farewell to the veteran opposition leader.
“As we prepare to lay our beloved Baba Raila Odinga to rest in just a few hours, I humbly take this moment to sincerely retract and apologise for every harsh word I uttered against him during the intense campaigns of the 2022 elections,” Barasa wrote.
The MP also commended President William Ruto for granting Raila a state funeral, describing the gesture as a unifying move that has helped heal political divisions.
“To our President William Ruto, our steadfast captain and team leader, your gracious decision to accord Jakom a befitting state send-off has truly healed old wounds and forgiven all past grievances among our sons,” he added.
Barasa’s message reflects a broader wave of reconciliation witnessed across Kenya’s political class following Raila’s death.
Leaders from various political divides have been paying tribute to the long-serving opposition chief, hailing his role in shaping the country’s democracy and national unity.
The burial, taking place in Siaya County, has drawn both local and international leaders.
