Police in Kikuyu have detained a 34-year-old man believed to be behind the murder of Jane Atila Quedeya, a student at the University of Nairobi’s Kikuyu Campus.
The suspect, Nicholas Mutua Mutia, was arrested after detectives linked him to the killing following weeks of investigation.
Atila had been reported missing on October 13 at Kikuyu Police Station. Her body, which was already decomposing, was discovered four days later in Kefri Muguga Forest.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), forensic fingerprint analysis carried out jointly with the National Registration Bureau confirmed her identity.
Investigators believe Atila was last seen in the company of Mutua, her estranged boyfriend, shortly before she disappeared.
The DCI said this connection is now a central part of their probe as they piece together events leading to her death.
Mutua was presented before the Kikuyu Law Courts on October 25, where detectives obtained 21 days of custodial orders to continue investigations.
The case will be mentioned again on November 13, as officers pursue more leads and await the results of additional forensic tests.
Police say efforts are ongoing to determine the motive behind the killing and whether other individuals may have been involved.
The DCI emphasized that detectives are working to ensure that those responsible face justice.
