Lawyer Cliff Ombeta Warns of Growing Tribal Divisions Ahead of 2027 Elections

Criminal lawyer Cliff Ombeta has expressed concern over what he describes as a return to tribal politics in Kenya as the country heads toward the 2027 general elections.

In a post on X, Ombeta observed that recent political events and protests across the country have exposed deep ethnic divisions, with different regions showing varying levels of participation and enthusiasm.

He questioned whether Kenyans were once again retreating into “tribal cocoons” instead of uniting around national issues.

“People have retreated to tribal cocoons. Did you take note that mandamano was centred mostly in Nairobi and Central? Did you take note that the larger part of the Rift was humble? Did you take note that Luo Nyanza was chilled? Did you take note that the coastal region was reluctant?” he asked.

Ombeta’s remarks come amid renewed political mobilization across the country, with leaders beginning to position themselves for the next election cycle.

The country has witnessed increased political activity since the start of 2025, with both the government and opposition making strategic moves to consolidate regional support.
