Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said KANU chairman Gideon Moi is set to play a role in President William Ruto’s broad-based government.
Speaking during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum on Thursday, Murkomen revealed that Moi’s recent meeting with the President was part of a wider plan to foster political unity and cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Murkomen described Moi’s decision to step down from the Baringo senatorial by-election as a calculated and mature political move.
According to him, Moi’s withdrawal avoided unnecessary confrontation and demonstrated a willingness to support a shared national agenda.
“Gideon Moi has done a wise thing; it could have seemed very bad if he had continued to run for the seat. There is a stage if you reach you cannot compete with young people to run for a political seat,” Murkomen said.
He acknowledged that some of Moi’s supporters might not have welcomed the decision but maintained that it was a sign of good judgment.
“I know some supporters might have been disappointed, but he has done a wise thing,” Murkomen noted.
The Cabinet Secretary said the President’s meeting with Moi was also a reflection of the government’s inclusive approach, which already brings together figures aligned with Azimio leaders Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“The meeting with the President was also a sign of unity because, as you are aware, there is a broad-based government which has Raila and former President Uhuru Kenyatta's allies in it,” he said.
Murkomen added that Moi’s involvement in this framework represents a growing consensus among leaders who want to work together beyond party boundaries.
“Gideon Moi has been invited to be in the broad-based government. We are also looking at the future in 2027, so that we can come together,” he stated.
The development marks a notable shift in Kenya’s political landscape, particularly in the Rift Valley, where the Moi and Ruto political camps have long stood apart.
Moi’s cooperation with the government could signal a new phase of alliance-building as the country heads toward the next general election.
