French President Emmanuel Macron has extended official condolences to the people of Kenya following the sudden death of veteran opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a message posted on social media, Macron described Odinga as a courageous figure whose life shaped Kenya's democracy.
The tribute comes amid a national outpouring of grief just two days after Odinga's passing.Odinga, aged 80, died of a heart attack on October 15, 2025, while on a health visit in India.
A towering figure in Kenyan politics for decades, he championed multiparty democracy, national dialogues, and pan-African integration during his tenure as prime minister from 2008 to 2013.
His death has prompted a state funeral in Nairobi today, attended by thousands under heavy security.Macron's message highlighted Odinga's global resonance.
"Raila Odinga was a voice for justice, freedom, and a steadfast believer in Africa's unity and integration," the French president stated.
He added, "His commitment to equality, inclusion reflected the very ideals that inspire democratic societies across the world."
The condolence has joined a wave of international tributes.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame noted Odinga's "lifelong dedication to public service and his steadfast commitment to democracy, justice, and unity in Kenya and across Africa."
Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni praised him as a freedom fighter and a champion for the East African Federation, urging youth to carry forward his vision.
