Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has paid tribute to the late former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a symbol of courage, resilience, and democratic struggle in Africa.
In a heartfelt message shared on X, Jonathan expressed deep sorrow over Odinga’s passing, calling him a distinguished African statesman who devoted his life to advancing democracy and unity across the continent.
“I am saddened by the news of the passing of H.E. Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya and a distinguished African statesman whose life symbolised resilience, courage, and democratic struggle in Africa,” Jonathan stated.
He described Odinga as a leader who believed in service over self and whose vision extended beyond Kenya to the broader African continent.
“Kenya has lost a patriot and our continent has lost a great leader, one that understood that leadership is not about self, but about service; who believed and looked forward to Africa's greatness and ascendancy,” he added.
Jonathan further hailed Odinga as a “committed pan-Africanist” whose impact on democracy and governance will continue to inspire future generations.
“I honour him not just as a brother in the cause of democracy, but as a committed pan-Africanist whose light will continue to shine,” he wrote.
Odinga’s death has drawn tributes from leaders across Africa, reflecting his influence beyond Kenya’s borders.
Many have remembered him as a steadfast advocate for multiparty democracy and good governance, who shaped the continent’s political landscape for decades.
“May history remember him kindly, and may Africa continue to be blessed by his hope, wisdom, and sacrifice.”
