Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has publicly praised former Kenyan Prime Minister and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, calling him a “steadfast statesman” whose leadership endures through decades of trials.
The commendation, posted on X on Monday, comes amid recent clarifications about Odinga’s health and shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
Barasa, whose own political career has faced scrutiny following a 2022 murder charge from which he was acquitted, described Odinga—affectionately known as Baba—as a figure whose “voice echoes with the quiet authority of wisdom” and whose global perspective remains unerring.
“In the forge of decades, through tempests of trial and triumphs of tenacity, Mzee has emerged as a steadfast statesman,” Barasa wrote, alongside an image of Odinga in a striking blue outfit outside a modern building.
The timing of Barasa’s praise aligns with ODM’s recent rebuttal of health rumors, with party spokesperson Dennis Onyango accusing allies of former Deputy President William Ruto of spreading misinformation.
Onyango confirmed Odinga is not unwell but on an international trip, including a recent visit to the African Union headquarters, reinforcing his candidacy for the AU Commission chairmanship.
Barasa’s remarks mark a notable shift from his earlier criticisms of Odinga, reflecting a strategic realignment as opposition parties, including Jubilee under Uhuru Kenyatta, seek unity against the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
This comes amid tensions in Bungoma, where Barasa’s gubernatorial ambitions have drawn local backlash.
