Former Chief Justice and presidential hopeful David Maraga has expressed deep sorrow following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Sharing his thoughts on X, Maraga described Odinga as “a patriot, a pan-Africanist, a democrat and a leader who made significant contributions to democracy in Kenya and in Africa.”
Maraga highlighted the national and continental significance of Odinga’s leadership.
“Kenya has lost one of its most formidable leaders who shaped the trajectory of our beloved country. Africa has lost a leading voice in pushing for peace, security and development. The world has lost a great leader,” he said.
The former CJ extended condolences to Odinga’s family, the people of Kibra Constituency, which he represented for many years, and residents of Siaya County, his birthplace.
He prayed for comfort for all Kenyans during this difficult time.
“May the Lord comfort us all as we deal with this enormous blow,” Maraga stated.
Raila Odinga’s political career spanned several decades. He served as Prime Minister during the Kibaki administration and ran for the presidency in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022.
His work in advancing democratic reforms and advocating for social and economic development earned him recognition across Africa.
Following Maraga’s statement, numerous public figures and ordinary citizens have shared tributes, praising Odinga’s commitment to democracy, conflict resolution, and nation-building.
His death marks the loss of a key political figure whose influence extended beyond Kenya’s borders.
