Ruto Crowned for Major International Honour in New York

President William Ruto has bagged a top international honor after UN-Habitat named him the Global Champion of Adequate Housing for All, putting Kenya in the global spotlight for its housing reforms.

The announcement came in New York during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where Ruto has been pitching Kenya’s development agenda to world leaders.

State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said the recognition cements Kenya’s position as a continental leader in providing affordable homes, a centerpiece of the president’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Ruto’s much-publicized Affordable Housing Programme has rolled out massive construction projects across the country, offering thousands of low and middle-income families a chance at homeownership.

But the president didn’t stop at collecting the honor. At a UNGA side event, he unveiled a bold plan to form a Coalition of Global Housing Champions.

The new movement is set to unite 25 countries, UN agencies, banks, and development partners in a historic push to end housing shortages worldwide.

“This is not just about bricks and mortar,” Ruto told delegates. “It is about restoring dignity and creating opportunity for every family.”

Observers say the move not only raises Kenya’s international profile but also positions Ruto as a key player in shaping urban development policy far beyond Africa.

With the coalition already gaining traction, the president is now riding high as the face of a global campaign to make housing both adequate and affordable.
