The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the death of a Kenyan officer who went missing while serving in the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) in Haiti.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NPS revealed that the officer disappeared on March 25 after an ambush along the Carrefour Paye-Savien supply route in the Pont-Sonde area of Artibonite Department.
His disappearance was reported the following day, prompting immediate search and rescue efforts by the MSSM in collaboration with the Haitian National Police (HNP).
“Unfortunately, we have received information confirming the death of our officer. The family has been informed and we extend our deepest condolences during this difficult time,” the police service said.
The incident underscores the high risks facing Kenyan officers deployed to Haiti, where criminal gangs have intensified attacks on security forces and civilians.
NPS noted that it has been in close contact with the bereaved family, offering support as investigations continue.
At the same time, NPS announced that the body of another officer, Corporal Kennedy Mutuku Nzuve, who died in a road accident on September 1, will arrive in Nairobi on September 26 for burial arrangements.
The police service reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of officers deployed abroad while ensuring that the objectives of the Haiti mission are carried out in accordance with international law.
Kenya assumed leadership of the MSSM earlier this year, deploying hundreds of officers to stabilize the crisis-hit Caribbean nation under a United Nations-backed mandate.
Thursday’s announcement marks the first confirmed fatality of a Kenyan officer in the mission.
