A storm is brewing within Kenya’s security apparatus after three police officers linked to the brutal killing of a Nairobi-based doctor reportedly went into hiding, raising fresh concerns about accountability within the ranks.
The officers—Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi and Constables Elijah Kibelion and Collins Kiplangat—have been implicated by detectives in the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso, a case that has gripped the country due to its alleged planning and execution in broad daylight.
Investigators believe the three played varying roles in the incident, with at least two now said to be on the run.
According to details emerging from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects were tracked at different stages of the alleged plot.
However, their sudden disappearance has complicated efforts to bring them to justice, even as authorities maintain that investigations are ongoing.
The case has taken a political twist following explosive claims by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who alleged that the officers were paid Sh1.5 million to carry out the killing.
Gachagua further claimed that two of the suspects had initially been arrested but were later released under unclear circumstances after alleged intervention from senior government officials.
“These officers are in Kenya. They are killers, and they have admitted participation in the murder,” Gachagua stated, questioning why individuals accused of such a serious crime would be allowed to walk free.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has yet to publicly respond to the allegations, even as pressure mounts on the government to clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported release of the suspects.
The unfolding developments have sparked public outrage, with civil society groups calling for an independent probe into the matter.
Questions are also being raised about possible collusion within the police service and whether the suspects are being shielded from arrest.
As the search intensifies, the focus now shifts to law enforcement agencies to demonstrate transparency and restore public confidence.
