Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly welcomed Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), marking a significant shift in Mt Kenya’s political landscape following Kang’ata’s exit from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
In a statement released after hosting the governor at his Wamunyoro residence, Gachagua described Kang’ata’s move as a return “home,” signaling growing consolidation within the newly formed outfit.
“I was pleased to receive my younger brother, Governor Irungu Kang’ata, as a member of our party, DCP, the party of the moment and the future,” Gachagua said.
Kang’ata’s defection comes months after he distanced himself from UDA, citing ideological and political differences.
His formal alignment with DCP now places him firmly within Gachagua’s camp, amid intensifying political reconfiguration in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua used the occasion to project DCP as an emerging national force, claiming the party has already attracted “millions of followers” and is positioning itself to field candidates across the country.
He said the party currently has representation at both national and county levels, including a Member of Parliament and several Members of County Assemblies.
“We are determined to be the majority party in both Houses and across County Assemblies,” he stated, outlining DCP’s ambition to challenge established parties in the next electoral cycle.
The meeting was attended by several leaders allied to the party, including Senator John Methu, who is the Secretary-General designate, and Senator Mithika Linturi, serving as National Organizing Secretary.
Others present were Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, Kirinyaga Senator James Murango, and Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa.
Kang’ata’s move is expected to influence political alignments in Mt Kenya, a region that has traditionally played a decisive role in presidential elections.
With just over a year to the 2027 polls, the battle for regional dominance appears to be taking shape, with DCP positioning itself as a key contender.
